Apple, Another Reason To Pick Intel

[ Joseph Scotts Blog] If you were making a sales pitch to Intel you better not be using a notebook from that other vendor (Apple) running that other OS (Mac OS) on that other CPU (PPC). Even though Intel itself doesn’t make notebook systems or the OS that goes on top of them, no one wanted to be seen as helping the competition by buying from vendors that didn’t use their product.

Video: The “Cool” Powerbook Apple didn’t build!

[Videowiki Feeds | feeding all the hungry little eyes] From my previous story on what the Intel Mac means for Apple, here’s the actual video of the Sony Vaio going from Windows XP to Mac OS X in three mins. In this short video, you’ll see dual-booting, experience the moderate Mac OS startup time and eventually the speed of operations on this 1Ghz Intel Centrino notebook.

Well that's the Intel Powerbook doomed then...

Technology, Books and Other Neat Stuffhttp://www.livejournal.com/users/sbisson [Technology, Books and Other Neat Stuff] I could make a solid bet that Apple is not tapping Sony engineers to get advice on that trendy look, but rather, they are looking for people to do the guts properly. It will take a team who understands the intricacies (or shall I say, hackeries) of x86 power management, not quite perfect integration of chipsets, and myriad edge-case design problems to get a decent marriage of the Apple hardware requirements.

Apple & Intel

[engadgeted.net] Read John Gruber for the reasons - there’s no way this is gonna be a smooth switch, putting an incredible burden on users and developers, what with the huge architectural differences. Even more importantly, should apple announce this at wwdc and the switch will take until 2006 (as suggested in that cnet rumor), they’ll cannibalize their sales for the rest of 2005 and i really don’t think apple’s willing to take that hit.

Apple to Use Intel Microprocessors Beginning in 2006

[that nanochurch blog] Apple to Use Intel Microprocessors Beginning in 2006 At its Worldwide Developer Conference today, Apple® announced plans to deliver models of its Macintosh® computers using Intel® microprocessors by this time next year, and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007. this would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

Apple to use stock Intel chipsets

http://www.tuaw.com [The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] Add that statement to the fact that Steve Jobs said during the announcement that his guys have been running OSX on Intel machines for five years, and I've got to wonder whether Apple will bring the first Mactel device sooner rather than later.

Did Apple make the right choice?

[theory.isthereason] With regards to XCode 2.1, the question for me is, since Apple wants developers to program for both architectures — PowerPC and Intel, why even add that option (http://img260.echo.cx/img260/8863/xcodeppcintel9zf.gif) where you have to tick this and that.

Apple to switch to Intel CPUs? One reason why.

[GoldSounds] They’re shifting the whole kit and kaboodle to Intel, developers first and then users in a year. They plan to support existing PowerPC apps using some very slick-looking emulation technology, but given the portability of OS X itself and the fact that Apple is giving away their cross-compiler environment to everyone who wants it, I would imagine that every app worth using will support PPC and Intel well before the consumer machines appear.

Bunny Man!

http://www.0gravity.co.uk/wordpress [a ZA boy in the UK] I guess that Apple would be totally against things like this these days *grin*. But it’s still quite funny nonetheless!

Mactel Firefox

[Neil's World - Not the world you expected] When Apple announced the move to Intel, the availability of Firefox was one of the first questions that came to mind. I'm glad to see Apple helping out Mozilla, considering that Safari and Mail.app are direct competitors to Firefox and Thunderbird.

Build your own x86 Mac

[The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] So far this group has had to restrict its efforts to the Windows and Linux worlds, but  Build Your Own Mac is a new website that hopes to change that. Articles include how to construct a system, how to install OS X on the system you create (regardless of what Apple tells you) and challenges the authors are currently aware of.

An Open Letter to Steve Jobs: Push Ahead with the Intel Move

[The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] If the delay in the projected switchover to Intel-based Macs has nothing to do with contracts with IBM, inability to produce the hardware now, and other distribution related issues, but rather, simply a stalling tactic to give the developers time to transition, then perhaps if more voices like Davidson's come to the fore, Steve and Apple might decide to begin their innovation a little sooner than originally predicted.

Apple : 2005.06.11 20.23.52

[Garoo - Blog] Jobs was given no choice but to move his business to Intel, when I.B.M. executives said that without additional Apple investment they were unwilling to pursue the faster and lower-power chips he badly needs for his laptop business.

Apple + Intel = ...Intel?

[The Fire Ant Gazette - A Midland, Texas Blog Published Continuously Since '02] Apple's market cap is around $31B; if you assume a 20% premium for a takeover, that's still less than $40B. It's a hefty chunk of change, to be sure, but Intel's almost six times the size of Apple from a market cap perspective, has a very strong balance sheet and over $8B in cash (as of 12/31/2004). A cash plus stock deal like this happens practically every day in other industries.
