Apple + Intel = Unholy Alliance?

[The Fire Ant Gazette - A Midland, Texas Blog Published Continuously Since '02] Update: The MacWorld forum dedicated to this story has some interesting conjecture, no doubt worth the price of admission...just like anything on this blog, about "the real story." I tend to side with the folks who see an Apple/Intel collaboration as being about something other than a processor. I like the suggestion of partnering with Intel to take advantage of WiMax (the upcoming wireless protocol with a five mile range), or of using Intel's XScale chip in a video iPod (or a completely new product). Less exciting but perhaps more practical is the suggestion that Intel might simply be another supplier of one of the myriad peripheral non-CPU chips used by Apple.

[Bill Cara: Capital Markets & Social Equity] Week #21 (2005-05-28) in Review: As to Intel, that sale was for a different reason. The INTC “story” this week was that Apple were thinking of switching to Intel chips. In addition to the extreme Over-bought condition of INTC, with stochastic indicators bouncing off 100 for the STO and in the 90 range for RSI, there is a doubt in my mind that Apple would actually commit to the costs of switching to a new technology. And I dont think Intel is so hard done-by that they are going to give it away free.

[Scobles Link Blog] Now, Fortune is corroborating my OS X on Intel report (from: Paul Thurrott): If it switched to Intel chips or allowed PC makers to build Intel-based Macs, Apple could benefit from the enormous economies of scale Intel achieves with its dominant market share, and from the x86s constant advances. Apple could also bring its costs”and possibly its products’ prices–down substantially. And that could boost its sales.

[Oncomputerstips.blogspot.com] On Computers Tips: I do not know why Intel is not blowing its horn about Pentium D? Maybe they are miffed at the less than stellar reviews of the dual-core 860 HT chip against arch-rival AMD. My take is dual core is great for power users -- like those who follow On Computers -- who want the much better (e.g., less hour glass) performance that only comes from having two CPUs ready to handle the juggling from all the processes we have going all the time.

[Viewfromthemountain.typepad.com] Applepeels: On Monday or Tuesday, I sent some e-mails from the dual G5. Later in the day I went back to send some more and found that neither the pull down menus or menu items on Mail 2.0 (mail.app) were responsive. I asked the opinions of a couple Apple technical experts, got a couple of suggestions with the caveat that I might need to reinstall. One particularly reliable expert told me that even that might not fix the problem. Well he was right, I reinstalled which took a long time since we had to go through the re-indexing once again. Mail 2.0 (mail.app) worked fine for about fifteen minutes and then quit letting me send mail even though receiving mail was fine. I went to my backup mail application, PowerMail, it crashed on launch. I downloaded their beta which is mentioned as Tiger compatible. It launched fine, grabbed a backup of my old mail database and proceeded to download a few thousand pieces of mail that I had sitting on servers. Once the downloads were done, I tried sending and once again got a crash of the app but not of OS X.
[Blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com] seattlepi.com Microsoft Blog: Explains the Journal story: "Besides hurting its own hardware business, such a path would put Apple in more direct competition with Microsoft, whose application programs are important to the success of the Macintosh. Instead, the company is likely to package its modified software with its own Intel-based hardware, though it is not clear how the company will prevent users from shifting the software to other machines, the executive said."
