[Blind Mind’s Eye] Microsoft has actually gotten a prototype of a completely managed operating system working in one of their research labs. Right now it doesn’t really do much, but it is a valid proof of concept that it can at least work to some degree with the existing tools out there. The kernel is written in C# and for those that don’t get this kind of accomplishment, “managed languages” like Java for most of their existance couldn’t write anything meaningfully low-level like a kernel.

[Pocket Philosopher] Milquetoast Biographica: In general, I despise the entire notion of the "LiveJournal Quiz Meme". At best, its totally pointless and at worst its a kind of viral lacissitude that allows people to be deluded into the notion that they are expressing themselves meaningfully in their journals without having to actually produce any original content. My LJ policy is, and has always been, if you dont have something nice (or interesting, or original, or sincerely meaningful) to say then don't say anything at all.

The "best friends" strategy where the kids have more toys than they can carry and are having ice cream and candy for breakfast (really. I have more than once seen at 7 or 8am in the morning kids sucking on lollypops or eating other candy while waiting for a bus or boat), which seems like it might be working but seems to lead to tantrums and kids that aren't interested in rules and regulations.

Anything less is a betrayal of American interests, and a moral failure to defend our way of life. Thus situations of genuine moral complexity are transmuted by Neoconservative alchemy into occasions for asserting power, and, with Bush - after 9/11 - it becomes American policy.

[Jerf.org] iRi 2004/3: For now, that's only written up in the developer's manual,and still a work very much in progress. It also depends on some of theprecise aspects of the outline structure that I have not discussed,such as its interaction with the Commands the user runs on theoutline, and the hitherto-unmentioned Undo/Redo system, so I can'tmeaningfully describe all of the indicators right now.
[Grotto11.com] Peeve Farm: Apple engineers eat their own dogfood, and they're going to be using the released version of Tiger (and particularly Mail) from now on; there's no way they're not going to notice the problems I've noticed. This just indicates the extent to which major parts of the OS have been rewritten this time around; previous major releases have really just been tune-ups, and this one is a big architectural shift, with everything morphing to support Spotlight all the way down to the kernel level. There are some obvious gains to be reaped from this, but also some areas in which traditional ease-of-use suffers. 10.4.1 will undoubtedly bring much relief.
